Young Leaders
Building confidence, skills and futures
Are you aged 11 or over, love gymnastics and want to get more involved?
Our Young Leaders programme gives young people the opportunity to learn alongside our coaches, support younger gymnasts and play an active part in Kingsbridge Gym Club. It’s a chance to build confidence, make friends and develop skills that will help at school, in work and beyond.
What will you do?
You’ll gain practical experience with support from our qualified coaches. Depending on your age, experience and confidence, you may help with:
- Classes, games and activities under a coach’s supervision.
- Encouraging younger gymnasts and helping them feel included.
- Club events, displays and competitions.
- Preparing sessions and keeping activity areas organised.
- Working with other leaders and learning how a gymnastics club runs.
You’ll start with manageable responsibilities and build your experience gradually.
What will you learn?
Being a Young Leader is about much more than gymnastics. You’ll develop communication, teamwork, organisation and problem-solving skills, while learning how to be a positive role model.
Our coaches will help you understand how to support fun, welcoming sessions, follow instructions and recognise when to ask for help.
From volunteering to a funded Helper course
We want to invest in young people who show enthusiasm and commitment.
Once you have completed 100 hours of volunteering, the club will pay for your British Gymnastics Gymnastics Helper course, provided you meet our progression criteria and the course entry requirements.
We’ll look for:
- Regular attendance, punctuality and reliability.
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
- Kindness, patience and respect towards others.
- The ability to follow instructions and club safety procedures.
- Potential to develop as a helper and a commitment to supporting the club.
Your volunteering hours will be recorded and your progress reviewed with the coaching team. Completing 100 hours is an important milestone; course funding also depends on your readiness and meeting the criteria above.
The Gymnastics Helper course is available from age 13, so younger leaders can begin gaining experience before progressing to formal training.

A pathway into coaching
Our programme can be the first step towards becoming a qualified helper and, in time, progressing to a level 1 Coach. We already have 16 young leaders developing their skills and eight qualified helpers now employed by the club. They are an important part of our team and help inspire the next generation of gymnasts.
Paid opportunities may become available as leaders develop, depending on suitable vacancies, age and qualifications.

Its national Leadership Academy is currently being reviewed, with new enrolments temporarily paused. Existing participants can continue their modules. You can find the latest updates and opportunities on its website.
