Kingsbridge Gym Club History

Kingsbridge Gym Club was established in May 1985, by our founder Jane Day who carried through a vision to make gymnastics available to everyone. An ethos we still aspire to today!

The Club operated out of The Kingsbridge Leisure Centre from 1985 until 2020, with the boys section uniting from Lower school gym in October 1987. The Club grew rapidly and started competing at regionals and gymnastic festivals across the country. KGC hosted its first Club champ’s competition on 13th July 1986, this quickly became a much-anticipated yearly event! We hope to get this back up and running again in 2022. KGC Club Champs is a great opportunity for our members to compete together and show off skills to family and friends.

In 1991 The Club held its own regional competition festival, which also became an annual event. Hundreds of gymnasts from far and wide came to compete and ‘slept over’ at our friendly festival, we plan to welcome competitors again soon.

One of the highlights for the club was in 1991 when 44 members and coaches gained international success when performing at Gymnaestrada in Holland. Gymnaestrada is the largest international general gymnastic exhibition in the world.

Another highlight was when in 1994 Sarah Hobbs won 3 gold & 2 silver medals at the South West Special Olympics. This was a very proud moment for the club.

The Club has always held an ambition to have a place of our own and that ambition was realised on 4th November 2020, with the club proudly moved into The Loft, Station Yard, Kingsbridge. This is thanks to Adrian one of our long-standing coaches and trustees, he never gave up and now the clubs dream is a reality!

We warmly welcome old and new members, visiting gymnasts and coaches to our club and hope you enjoy our facilities. And to quote Jane, Happy Handstands to you!
